SPUYTEN DUYVIL
(the Devil’s whirlpool)

                                                                   For Agabus.

How many of us are at the table?
The writing table.
The multiplications table.
Table of contents.
Table of elements.
We are never all here.

Too, now, we are one less.

                                                                   Minus one.

His cellphone lying on the kitchen table;
his body found countless
hours and miles away,
somewhere around Spuyten Duyvil.

At 18, how,
how could he possibly know
that we are never enough?

                                                                   Alone.
